The Seven Deadly Sins “The Essence of Sin”

Jeremiah 2: 1-13, 19

The words “7 Deadly Sins” do not appear in the Bible in this manner…however each is discussed individually and over the course of History, have earned this title collectively.

PRIDE – WRATH – ENVY – SLOTH - GLUTTONY – GREED – LUST

Have we done as our world has and turned these into “VIRTUES”

Prov. 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death!”

Jeremiah 2: 1-13, 19 The “Essence of Sin” Why is there sin?

2 basic reasons for the essence of sin in our lives:

1.     Denial – We don’t want to admit that we too are as guilty as the next person or the rest of the world.  Denial causes rationalization and justification for our thoughts and behaviors.

IT IS THE DENIAL OF SIN THAT MAKES IT FATAL!

2.     Lack of “AWE” (As it relates to God) Jer. 2:19

a.     AWE can also be described as “The Fear of the Lord”,

b.     The very reason we break the laws of God is because we lack an adequate sense of the AWE regarding God.

Prov. 2: 1-11 The Fear of the Lord is the BEGINNING of Wisdom

Fear in your heart and the Fear of the Lord are similar in the sense that they both grab our attention and direct our actions, but one causes torment and the other EMPOWERS us!

AWE of God and Understanding our NEED for a Savior from Sin

These Need to be realized to find success as a follower of Christ
